Windows in ivory towers

Been busy the past few weeks – spent a couple days in Tempe at the Resilience 2011 meeting. All the stars of the hodge-podge (i.e. interdisciplinary) field were there, along with 40% of the conference being students and the like. I’ll have a lot to say about it if I take the time to write it out, but that’s unlikely at this point – comp’s in 3 weeks!

The highlight for me, though, was Bill Clark’s Grand Challenges of Sustainability Science talk (link is to his slides, posted online). Despite some unfortunate technical difficulties with his presentation, he gave a moving talk reprimanding academics to see beyond the intellectual curiosity of this area of research and remain firmly focused on the “human needs” part of the sustainability definition. Problems of sustainability and resilience are very real and they are happening today, yesterday, and tomorrow.
